About the town
Sarteano (pop. 4,700) is located in the province of Siena, region of Tuscany, app. 100 km southeast of Florence and 60 km southeast of Siena. A medieval castle (dating from 1038) overlooks the town, which is centered on the small Piazza del XXIV Giugno. Despite its beauty, this is not a tourist-heavy town! You will be enjoying all the town has to offer in no time.

Local Attractions
Sarteano boasts extremely fine restaurants, caffes and gelaterias. You will be surprised at the fantastic meals to be had in the center of this historic town. Enjoying fine food and wine is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Italian culture! We especially enjoy La Gustea (amazing pizza!), La Locanda dei Tintori, Bar I Diavoli (gelato!)and Chiostro Cennini. You will have time to try them all!
There are events happening almost every evening in town, culminating in the annual Giostra del Saracino, a jousting tournament which pits one neighborhood, or contrada, against another. This medieval festival has been held here for hundreds of years. The Museum of Archeology and thousand-year-old Castle are fascinating to explore, and the weekly farmers market on Friday mornings is not to be missed!
A favorite afternoon hangout is the Parco delle Piscine, which boasts a sparkling spring fed pool, caffe, plenty of lounge chairs and more. Daily tickets can be purchased on site or at the guesthouse, La Gustea.
