Sarek Gutierrez (he/him) is a percussionist whose performances have been described as “elegant and precise” to “brutally powerful” (Kamikaze Blog).
Mr. Gutierrez is an active orchestral percussionist primarily performing with the San Antonio Philharmonic and Mid-Texas Symphony. He has been a guest performer most notably with the Austin Cinematic Orchestra, West Texas Symphony, Lubbock Sy mphony, Lubbock ChamberOrchestra, and Classical Music Institute Chamber Orchestra.
As a percussion soloist, he has been featured with the CMI Chamber Orchestra, the UTSA New Music Festival, the Space City Performing Arts Concert Series and summer music festivals, and with the UWO Percussion Ensemble with Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy). As a chamber musician, Sarek has over a decade of experience performing in professional Flute/Marimba duos, and with his internationally performing percussion trio, 3G Percussion.
Students participating in the Summer in Tuscany program can expect a major focus to be chamber music playing. Students will get the opportunity to perform a wide variety of repertoire that can help them expand their musicianship.
During the academic year, Mr. Gutierrez currently teaches as a full-time lecturer at Texas A&M University San Antonio, where he teaches courses in music appreciation. He previously taught at Our Lady of the Lake University; where he taught courses in percussion, pedagogy, and music production.
Mr. Gutierrez is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Percussion Performance degree from Texas Tech University. He previously earned degrees from The University of Western Ontario (MM), and The University of Texas at San Antonio (BM) with a Distinguished Performance Certificate. He additionally completed a semester abroad program in Urbino, Italy studying jazz vibraphone with Marco Pacassoni. His primary percussion teachers include Dr. Lisa Rogers, Dr. Michael Mixtacki, Dr. Jill Ball, Dr. Graeme Francis, and Prof. Sherry Rubins.
